I am quite a feminist. I really hate atrocities committed against women. When Indian women were not allowed to enter the kitchen during menstruation, I felt bad.I am glad all that has changed now.

But I am also a staunch Hindu and still do not like women entering temples of worship or touching the images or idols of god, during their periods. Because it is our culture.And never tamper with tradition and culture.

Nowadays it is being circulated everywhere that these traditions are myths. I agree ,to a certain extent, yes.I am a doctor, so I agree to a certain extent. And since I am a doctor, I disagree upon certain things too. Sex during menstrual periods is not only taboo for tradition.It is also very unhygienic.So our ancestors were right about that.And about entering temples and places of worship.

And if you believe in god and respect our religion Please do not interfere with the religious beliefs of people.

Woman you must be proud to be a Hindu. Do not interfere with tradition and religion.Like the protests for women in menstruating years to enter the very isolated,the very sacred temple of Lord Ayyappa in Sabarimala.  But when tradition gets too cruel or hurtful, do revolt. 

Sabarimala sees a footfall of millions,sometimes fifty million people visiting the sacred temple. So these protests against a deeply rooted tradition is silly. There are umpteen and one reasons for women to protest. Protesting for just causes is commendable.Woman you are "Shakti" or power incarnate.Protesting against injustice to womanhood is your right. But do not tamper with the religious feelings of people.That would be foolhardy and dangerous.

TREKKING TO SABARIMALA

In response to a PIL filed in 1991, the Kerala High Court had observed the restriction of entry of women ( in the 10-50 age group ) to the temple was in accordance with the usage prevalent from time immemorial. In lieu of this, it had directed the Devaswom Board to uphold the customary traditions of the temple. However, on 28th September 2018, the Supreme Court of India, overturned the ban on the entry of women, declaring that the selective ban on women was unconstitutional and discriminatory. 

But one Lady judge Indu Malhotra noted in her dissenting judgement that “what constitutes an essential religious practice is for the religious community to decide” and not a matter that should be decided by the courts. She added that “notions of rationality" cannot be invoked in matters of religion by courts. 

Well Supreme court also consists of human beings as judges.Does our constitution say that we should interfere with a tradition rooted deeply for hundreds of years.To interfere with the religious beliefs of fifty million people for whom the Temple is very sacred. 

Well the Pandalam royal family and Raja and the worshipping priests/Tantris have announced that they will not admit women of a certain age group to enter the temple. They have declared that the protests and counselling will start from the Pampa river itself. I support them. And thousands of women do. There is a campaign going on among educated,cultured women, the "Ready to wait" campaign. Wise ladies. I support them.

Before proceeding on the yatra, Vratham ( a fortyone day austerity period) ,mandala puja and Irumudi are very important preparations for the pilgrims. During the vrath period total abstinence from intoxicating drinks and substances and abstinence from women, are strictly practiced.

Well I support the Ayyappa bhaktas.I am praying to Lord Ayyappa. He will take care of these unnecessary acts. I am also praying that this year, the pilgrimage will go off without a glitch and have an happy ending and end smoothly. Ayyappa Saranam,Saranam Pon Ayyappa. We bow at the feet of our beloved God ,the Golden God,Ayyappa.

Lord Ayyappan is a celibate bachelor  sitting in his yogic pose in isolation, amidst several mountains and crossing several forests.His yogic fire spreads to a huge unimaginable distance. This yogic fire will burn you, if you foolhardy women attempt to intrude where you are not allowed.
